The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires a minimum of forty hours of flying time to obtain the Private Certificate, at least twenty of that must be with an instructor. The FAA has certain requirements that must be fulfilled (e.g., various types of takeoffs and landings, particular maneuvers, trips over 50 nautical miles...etc.) during those hours of flying time. Almost all students require more that the required FAA minimum flight time to obtain their Private Certificate.

Students learn in a comfortable environment at their own pace. You and your instructor will work together, using the CTA system as a leaning tool and to track your progress. The information covered on-line coincides with your flight training lessons. At the completion of your ground training, you will be ready for the FAA knowledge exam.

Flight training is divided into three stages that are broken into ten phases with each phase building on previous phase. Students begin with the stage known as Pre-solo. This consists of learning the fundamentals of controlling the aircraft in straight and level flight, turns, climbs, and descents. Basic maneuvers are practiced to improve proficiency and develop the skills needed for landings. During local flight operations, students continue to practice basic maneuvers, and will progress to landing at various airports. Once a student has accomplished a number of FAA requirements, and the instructor verifies that the student is ready, the Solo and Cross-country stage begins. During this stage, special types of takeoffs and landings are practiced, along with the basic maneuvers covered earlier. Trips to destinations over 50 nautical miles are flown both solo and with the instructor. Once all the FAA training requirements are completed, the Practical Test Preparation stage begins in order to improve flight proficiency for the final flight review and flight test recommendation.
For interested students, additional training materials are available.

Examinations for the Private Pilot Certificate

During your ground and flight training, you will be preparing for the FAA knowledge and practical examinations. The FAA knowledge exam consists of 60 multiple-choice questions covering simple aerodynamics and theory, aircraft operations, FAA regulations, weather and navigation. When you have completed your ground and flight training, you will take the Private Pilot Practical Test. This test consists of an oral examination and a flight test with an FAA designed examiner. Upon successful completion of the exam, you will receive your Private Pilot Certificate. Both the FAA knowledge exam and the Practical test are administered at NS Aviation.

A medical exam, administered by an Aviation Medical Examiner, is required prior to solo. This is a basic medical exam that tests vision, hearing, reflexes, etc. We recommend that this requirement be completed early in your training to avoid possible later disappointment and surprises. Many doctors in the area are FAA Medical Examiners. An Aviation Medical Examiners links is listed in the Aviation Links page. See us for the one nearest one you.
