Flight training is divided into three stages that are broken into ten phases with each phase building on previous phase. Students begin with the stage known as Pre-solo. This consists of learning the fundamentals of controlling the aircraft in straight and level flight, turns, climbs, and descents. Basic maneuvers are practiced to improve proficiency and develop the skills needed for landings. During local flight operations, students continue to practice basic maneuvers, and will progress to landing at various airports. Once a student has accomplished a number of FAA requirements, and the instructor verifies that the student is ready, the Solo and Cross-country stage begins. During this stage, special types of takeoffs and landings are practiced, along with the basic maneuvers covered earlier. Trips to destinations over 50 nautical miles are flown both solo and with the instructor. Once all the FAA training requirements are completed, the Practical Test Preparation stage begins in order to improve flight proficiency for the final flight review and flight test recommendation.
